How do you start a foundation in Canada?

I am interested in starting a foundation in my son’s name (he was born 16 weeks early) in order to help fundraise for various events that will help out NICU’s across Canada. Events like walk-a-thons, gift drives at Christmas for babies in the NICU’s, sponsor a family in the NICU for Christmas, donating carseats and baby items to needy NICU families.

But I have no idea how to legally pull this off. Any direct information on how to do this would be wonderful.

It clearly will be a non-profit org, but do I have to register as one in order to call it that? And can I make it so people can get tax receipts for their donations?

Any information would be awesome.

Do you think this is a good Christmas present idea for my little foster brother?

Ok I know it’s earlyish, but I’m starting to think about Christmas lol. He’s 5 years old and came to live with us 2 months ago through a foster to adopt program, he had a tough start to life and was beaten by his dad, and has no other family. So this means he hasn’t really had a happy Christmas yet, so we’re trying to make this one special. My parents, aka, Santa, are getting him a nintendo ds. I have a part time job and have done for a while, so I have quite a stash of money tucked away for this Christmas (for a 15 year old anyway) I was thinking about getting Josh a bike. He’s never had one before so I thought it would be good to get him one and teach him to ride it. I was thinking about this one, what do you think? If you don’t think he’ll like this one, any other suggestions would be grand =)

Good first car for 18 year old girl?

So my daughter will be graduating High School this year , and with her birthday coming up in December, the wife and I have been shopping around for a good graduation/christmas gift for my daughter. Right now shes driving our old 2006 A4, which is slowly starting to get outdated, and we would like a new/newer vehicle for her.

My wife insisted we check out some of the cheaper car dealers (Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Toyota, Honda), etc and we’ve looked at a few cars, but nothing really spikes our interest. I know at 16, I wouldn’t have been caught dead driving a cheaper American/Japanese/Korean car, and I’m sure my daughter feels the same way.

I visited the Porsche dealer which a buddy of mine owns, and I’ve been offered a used 2010 Boxster for around 40k, which seems to be a fairly good deal. The only issue is the car is a manual, and my daughter does not know how to drive manual, and being a 2 seater is something she probably wouldn’t like.

I’ve also stopped by the local Mercedes dealer, and looked at a few of their cars, and am considering purchasing a 2011 C300 for her.
She has been hinting at the idea that she would like another Audi (A5 this time), but I’ve had bad experiences with their cars, and the 2006 A4 we purchased 5 years back has had alot of money put into it, so I’d prefer not to purchase another Audi.

What it comes down too is we’re looking for a reliable, safe car for her, looking to spend only 30-40k, and preferably new. The last option is to give her one of our cars, (2010 Porsche Panamera, 2008 Mercedes E550) but that’s really not an optimal decision for us.

Can I get some advice here, perhaps personal experiences w/ certain cars, personal opinions, etc on the matter?

Michael: while I realize an AWD would be “safer” per se for a teen driver, We’ve had bad experiences with our Audi, and are looking for something a bit more reliable.
Also, thanks for the Volvo suggestion, Volvo is a brand that just completely passed by mind, now that I think about it, I’ve only heard good things. I’ll talk to a few colleagues, and see what they think and perhaps do a bit more research into them.

SA: Yeah, when I personally went in to test drive the Mercedes, I was quite surprised at how it simply “felt” luxurious. I’ve always considered the C-class to be the lowest entry level Mercedes, but it felt on par with my Wife’s E class. This car is probably our top choice at this moment.
