Appropriate Christmas Gifts for my Not Boyfriend’s Family?

I am trying to figure out some appropriate Christmas gifts for the family I’m spending Christmas with this year. I am from out of state and can’t make it home so one of my friends invited me to his house. We are not dating but I still think it’s important to bring something, not only as a grateful guest, but because it’s Christmas. There will be a lot of extended family there as well as my friend’s parents and two brothers. Any suggestions on how to give gifts without making the rest of his family assume we’re a couple? I know it might be inevitable, but I would still like to be tasteful.

Christmas gifts for my boyfriend’s family…?

okay, so for him I am shelling out $80 for a volcom jacket he’s been eyeing
But I also want to get something for his mom
and his sister, who’s a senior in high school
His mom is a widow, and has a really stressful job, but she always makes time for my bf and his sis, and she loves to shop.
So, i was thinking of giving her $45 to the mall, and maybe putting together a “pamper me” basket, with godiva chocolates and a candle and slippers and smelly stuff.
she made me an amazing blanket for my birthday
and i totally wasn’t expecting her to get me anything
So I want to show her how important she and her family are to me
I was thinking of getting a $45 gift card for his sis too, since she adores shopping as well. But I want to get her something to go with it, just something little. Shes not really into designer brands, and she dislikes girl people. I’m kinda stuck and I don’t know if these ideas are good ones and i dont want to ask my bf, bc i want him to be surprised by it. Ideas?

What great ideas!!! I would do $50 for Mom and $25 for sis. How about some kind of basket for sis too with some sort of theme. Maybe a movies and a couple packs of microwave popcorn and a box of Jr. Mints, or do a small stocking with small stuff and the gift certificate like chap stick, hand lotions, socks, a compact mirror, nail file for her purse, fiction novel, etc.

Ideas for my boyfriend’s family for Christmas?

We’ve been dating a year now and i’m spending Christmas with his family. I’ve only met them once before, we spent a week camping and we all get along great! I’m in graduate school and on a pretty tight budget so I can’t buy them all indivdiual gifts. I’m having a hard time coming up with a good family gift for them all. Initially I thought about making some goodies and taking that but then I talked to my boyfriend’s mom and she casually remarked how her and his younger sister spent the whole weekend baking. Now I have no idea. I also have to be able to put it in my luggage since we’ll be flying. I was thinking that some sort of camping gift would be cool since they all would get to enjoy it and it would be a gift from something i’ve done with them. But I really have no idea what that would be. They’ve really got it all together when camping but i’m hoping there might be that one little thing that makes it more enjoyable. Any ideas???? Thanks!

Christmas gift for boyfriend’s parents?

Okay, so I’ve been dating my boyfriend for 9 months and I’ve gotten to know his family very well. I want to get everyone in his family a nice gift for Christmas and I already know what to get his sisters and brother but I want another opinion for his parents gift.
I had a few ideas for his mom. She isn’t hard to buy for but I wasn’t sure what to get for his dad. So I was thinking getting them a $50 gift card to Olive Garden might be a good idea. That way they can have a nice night out and a good dinner together since they don’t get to go out much and need a night out.
I was thinking Olive Garden because its a nice enough restaurant without breaking the bank and I think $50 should cover Dinner, some drinks and desert (I looked at the menu and figure up about $45 so $50 to be on the safe side).
So would a gift card to Olive Garden be a good gift? I know gift cards can be impersonal sometimes but if its so they can have a date night I think it would be personal enough and they do like Italian food. His mom is a vegetarian and they have some nice veggie options so she’ll have good variety. Any thoughts?
If you guys don’t read the question please don’t answer! Good lord.
My boyfriend thinks anything I suggest sounds good… he’s not much help lol
He does have hobbies… but he’s really not the kind of guy who likes material things so its hard to figure out what to get so I thought the gift card would work because a free meal is always good!

One of the couples live in their own apartment (early 20′s)
And the other couple have just moved into one of their homes shared with parents (One early 20′s other late 20′s)
Has anyone got any ideas what I could get them?
Small presents about £10.
Thanks!
I know! A bottle of wine would be perfect or easy! But two of them don’t drink. And the other couple only drink spirits and beer at partys!! Awkward people!

A thoughtful gift for a mother on Christmas? $300 limit.?

Hi! I’m Stephenie, I’m 18 years old
And this Christmas is the first Christmas I’m actually gonna have a real amount of money to buy my mom something nice. She has 3 kids, she’s EXTREMELY hard working, she’s so stressed out and she’s really depressed. She’s divorced, she works and lives pretty much for her three kids (me included). She’s also very low income, so she never has any extra money to buy herself anything nice. Since I’m a teenager, we do get into fights a lot, and I know she has her doubts that I don’t care about her.. if only she knew. I want her to know that I care about her. I want to show her.

I’m buying her an ipod shuffle. $50. And I’m gonna fill it up with all her favorite songs. I know she’d love that, she loves music and she’s always listening to the radio and singing, but she can never afford an ipod.

But $50? One little present? For everything she’s ever done for me?! Yeah right! I want to get her something else too, something BIG!

I *was* going to get her two tickets to see a broadway play, me using the other ticket of course! To see a musical. But the tickets are $200 each and I’m not sure which one she would like to see But I know she’d absolutely love that. But to see a broadway play, after I’d like to take her out to eat.. and than her whole present with the ipod is gonna be over $500 and I honestly just don’t have that kind of money. I work at Kentucky Fried Chicken lol! It’s my first day on Monday.

I need better suggestions. Hopefully something me and her could do together.

Or just other great presents.

Please help?

XmasShopper answers:

Actually, you could probably just do away with the ipod and go ahead and get the tickets to a broadway show.

Since you said you’re going with her. I think she’ll love that a lot since it’s a very thoughtful gift and it is quality bonding time for the both of you!

I have to say though, I really like how you’re thinking of someone else for this holiday! I mean, all I see on yahoo are selfish little brats asking ‘what should I ASK for?’ I mean srsly!? You want strangers from over the internet to tell you what to ask for? Lol

(You on the other hand sound very selfless! I know it sound cheesy coming from a stranger over the internet…but I’m just shocked that I found someone around my age sounding like an adult!)

Actually, you could check prices for spas (for the both of you). I’m not sure how much they are. I mean, to get nails done and just relaxing while still bonding…would be a different surprise for your mother.

Or you could get her the ipod and maybe get different types of gift cards to stores she really likes but can’t afford right now, maybe take the family out for dinner at a decent place that’s not KFC! (lol)

I think you’ll find the perfect gift for her, since you don’t sound like a spoiled brat!

Fruit baskets are also very nice. You can find these at most fine market or Sam’s Club/Costco.

Need christmas gift ideas for my spoiled step daughter?

Let me start off by saying that she isn’t a spoiled BRAT, she’s a nice girl but has everything! She is not quite 11 years old but she already has an ipod, camera, wii, Tv/dvd in her bedroom full of toys, and any movie, game or craft she’s ever wanted. We usually ask her what she wants for xmas, but when we buy that, she ends up getting 2 of everything, as her mother’s side buys it too! Her Mother’s side of the family has taught her theat it isn’t JUST what you get, but HOW MUCH you get too, they are all about the quantity of presents.
We don’t live that way and teach our children, and try to instill in her that it is more about spending time making memories with family and being greatful for what you have, but she usually gets very dissappointed when she spends Cristmas with us, as she will only have a few (7-10 or so) gifts. We try to get her things that reflect her passions, like the guitar she wanted one year, and she’s an awesome little painter, so we got her a Painting easel, fully stocked with brushes, canvas and paint etc, but once she gets them home, her mother “puts them away” and she forgets all about them.

I really dont know what to buy this year, and I really try hard not to over do it, but when you get everything you ask for, what is left? She lives too far away for us to get her things we’d need to take her to, like snowboard lessons, horseback riding etc, and her hair is to her knees, so fun hair stuff is out, as is jewelry (it gets caught in said hair) and bath stuff.
PLEASE HELP!!

It’s a must-have for that age group and is sort of educational in that it teaches them to use their creativity and imagination as it has a free website attached to do some cropping, special effects and sounds when she uploads on her computer and have fun showing it off!
Christmas Gift Help?

I am making baskets for everyone for Christmas this year. My younger sister just turned 12 and is now wearing make up and dressing up.
They make these super cool life size vinyl stickers that can go on your car or walls in your home. They peel right off to be moved! They are great. I just took some of my son’s favorite animal photos and used them to create a jungle feel in his room. But you can use the stickers for a lot of things, maybe her cats? Or other random cats? Then she can stick them on the walls of her sitting room or family room maybe? Or even stick them on her car! Check out their site http://www.ipixxl.com. Good luck and Happy Holidays!

Is it appropriate for ex-spouses to give gifts to each other?

XmasShopper answers:

I think that it depends on how amicable the divorce was. If we were still friends I’d get gifts for him. Like it or not, he will have a relationship in some form with this woman for the rest of his life because they have children together. She is still the mother of his children and as such deserves a little bit of respect. Christmas and birthday gifts, as long as they’re not extravagant are completely acceptable. Unless you think they’re trying to get back together or something, try not to make an issue of it. Either you can trust him or you can’t. If you can, who cares if he’s buying occasional (for special occasion) gifts for a woman who is (I’m assuming) still doing an admirable job raising his children. He is right to appreciate that about her and honor her for it. Get over it or get out of the relationship. Either it will fizzle out on its own or it’s a long-standing tradition, but either way you come off petty and distrustful by begrudging these small gifts. Altered family though they may be, they are still a family, and nothing anyone does will change that. They at least are being mature about the divorce, which is more than what many couples do.

Do something ‘creative’.. It shows more love than just buying things..
Get a journal and write it it everything you want to tell them.. About how great they are and everything you have all been through together.. Make it fun.. Writing AND little illustrations and pictures.
Good times.
I know it doesnt sound ‘special’ written like this but it will be special when you’re all crying and laughing together
Good luck!
Oh and what would be the cherry ontop is if you could get them tickets for a cruise or something (if you have money to spend).. You and your siblings (if youhave any) could put your money together. I think thats really thoughtful.
If you can’t do that, you should turn your living room into ‘Paris’ or ‘Rome’ for the night for new years… Literally.. Just the two of them.. That would be lovely and really romantic.

Birthday gift then a Christmas gift?

Me and my girl have this discussion every year. She was born on December 9 so guess what. 16 days later it’s Christmas. In her family they feel that you should go all out every year for someone’s birthday. Nothing wrong with that when you are a kid living at home. But when you get older and start having kids you shouldn’t expect everyone to go all out for your 30th, 35th or her upcoming 38th birthday. Here’s another breakdown. When she gets paid she’s usually got like $1200+ in the bank. I usually have about $600. Yet in still she’s expecting two gifts this year. She wants an iPod touch for Christmas. I told her this morning that I’ve priced them and those things are running around $250+ and that would just about wipe me out. Plus she wants me to take her to dinner for her birthday. I tried to compromise with her by saying I would get her the iPod but it would have to be a Christmas gift only. Next thing you know is that she’s standing there crying because she thought I was saying I didn’t care about her birthday like her parents did when they were kids. I’m not saying it’s wrong of her to expect two gifts, a birthday then a Christmas gift but given my financial status compared to hers is it fair to me that she’s asking for such an expensive gift for X-mas then a b-day gift next week? The only thing I want is a portable GPS system for my car. We tend to take a lot of road trips and she’s not the best person to read a Mapquest or a Yahoo direction print out. And the ones I’ve looked at are running about $150. Plus, with today’s economy that’s a little much for someone to expect a person to buy them when they only bring home about $500 every 2 weeks.

Am I wrong to think that way?

Again, she’s turning 38 and she still acts like a kid when it comes to her birthday.
To Tyler,

I have a college degree but you know the situation with jobs these days. You have to take what you can get. I’m looking for a better job but when I take off from this one I usually don’t get paid. Even with this company, when they close for a holiday they expect you to use your personal time in order to get paid for the time they were closed.

XmasShopper answers:

She wants to be celebrated and it is okay of her to expect a birthday and Christmas present and a dinner – but she is being insensitive to your financial situation. It is not normal to tell someone what to get you for each holiday and expect it regardless of what the person makes. What she should expect is two gifts within your budget. She should not specify what to buy her and ignore the effect it will cause on you – in fact, she shouldn’t be so specific at all. It takes the mystique out of the holidays. You should get her two smaller presents and a dinner you can afford. There is a reason for a wish list and the surprise present – it gives the giver some leeway. She should not be so controlling about what is given and how it is given. You should also appreciate that these seem to be important occasions for her and respect that.

I would want my boyfriend to buy me a beach house in the Bahamas but if he can’t afford it, tell him to take out a loan or I will cry? No. We all want a lot of things. You can’t force it. It is supposed to be a holiday, not a pressuring monetary exchange.

If you like to bake, just bring some homemade cookies. Or simply offer to bring a side dish. Or ask your roommate if her parents like wine and which kind. Have a merry christmas!

What should I get her for Christmas?

I don’t want to spend over $100 on my younger cousin this year. Last year I didn’t really keep track and definately spent too much, and I only have $200 to go between the last 3 gifts I need to buy, although I would like to save about $75-$50 if by any way possible for myself.

My little cousin is going to be fourteen this spring, and definately the icing on my cake. We’ve gotten so close over the past year and she trusts me more than her own parents and siblings sometimes. Plus she’s always excited to see what I thought of for her christmas gifts.

She loves makeup, and loves the girly gifts I pick out for her. Pretty much I think back to 2 years before- like what I wanted and was into. Times have changed but we’re pretty much on the same page. She’s incredibly smart, but she’s not really that into sports or anything like that.

I’ve asked her what she wanted for Christmas; her response was “lots of makeup, hair dye, nail polish, and clothes.”

Any ideas for unique gifts that I could give her? Or anything at all?
I’m the one who likes Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers, not her. xD
Yeah, I’m a teen myself {little under 2 years older} but this year I’m stumped.

Home made christmas gift for 4 year old little sis?

I love my lil sis, and i want to make a great gift for her, and my cuz, parents, and brother.
My sister loves ponies and sweets, and my brother and cousin just got ipods, my parents love music, if that helps.
Thank you and happy holidays!

XmasShopper answers:

You are a very generous person – what a lucky family you have! For your little sister, there are some wonderful My little Pony toys available – or a giant sized My Little Pony soft toy (like the one the little girl has on the Transformers movie) – they are about $40.

If you want to make something – do this – my daughter made this and it looks so amazing. At your local store buy a square shaped blank canvas (craft stores have them) and a wooden “easel” stand. Paint around the edges of the canvas in her favorite color. Glue a big square of patterned paper (Barbie, My Little Pony, Disney Tinkerbell or whatever she loves) onto the front of the canvas. You can buy this at a scrapbook store or your local craft store. Buy at the same store a wooden letter that is the first letter of her name. Paint it to match the paint around the edge of the canvas. Glue it on with craft glue onto the canvas. Glue on a heap of pretty paper flowers (craft shop/scrapbook shop). Glue on a photo of her with you. Use a product called “Kindy Glitz – Crystalina” (like a liquid glitter glue) to decorate around the letter of her name, on the paper kindy-glitz around the design/ponies/whatever and kindy-glitz around the edge of the photo. It looks so beautiful and she will love it. You can glue everything together with double sided craft tape – they sell that at the scrapbook shops too – if you ask the people in the shop they will help you get all you need!!

1. Canvas
2. Photo
3. Cardstock
4. Patterned paper
5. Disney stickers / flowers / etc.
6. Kindy glitz crystalina
7. Double sided tape
8. Stand for it to sit on

If this sounds too hard (it is Christmas very very soon!!) get her the giant pony and tuck a beautiful little girl hand-bag in with the pony and fill the bag with sweets she likes.

For your brother and cousing – games for their playstation/xbox are always popular – or you can get i-tune gift cards so they can download songs they like.

For Mum and Dad – why not get an autographed album cover or framed autograph of one of their favorite musicians? Of perhaps a pile of the latests cd’s presented in a big basket with delicious treats and home made cookies. Perhaps if they like classical music or italian stuff – you could make an italian appreciation basket – add a Pavarotti cd, some pasta, italian panna cakes, italian biscuits, a beautiful italian calender for 2008. You can do that with any type of music – just relate it to something.

You could even do that for your little sister – buy her the “My little Ponies” or the disney Princess calendar – there is an absolutely gorgeous Disney Princess Pop Up Calendar this year – put that in a big huge white basket for her – add some of the cute Disney Princess lego/megablocks – add heaps of her favorite sweets – add a Disney Princess color book and Disney Princess markers/crayons. Maybe pop in a pretty scarf or pretty gloves or hair accessories for her – make it all match in pinks and purples. Then wrap the basked in a big piece of clear cello wrap. Bunch it up at the top and tie with a huge big pink and purple bow. She will love this so much!

I got him an axe body spray gift set, but I wanted to give him something else, something sort of special. i went out today and bought a cute new pair of shoes and a shirt to take him out tonight, of course it’d be on me, but, does anyone think this is stupid? most importantly would he like it?!

We have only been together since 9/23 so it’ll be 3 months together by Christmas. I just dont want him to feel uncomforterable if he got me something less expensive. I wouldn’t care but he could.
I think he is planning on getting me George Strait concert tickets. Idk… he asked me if I liked him. I do not know what those would cost.

Yes, for a 3 month relationship, that is too much to spend. How will you top it next year. Give a gift from your heart. If he’s going with you to the concert, then you don’t have to worry about the cost of the tickets.

All up to you. If you want to, go for it. I wouldn’t get anything too personal since you two just met not too long ago. Perhaps just take note of something he likes and get him something small, that isn’t personal. If he asks why, just say – I was out shopping, saw this and said – what the heck! So here you are, hope ya like.

I think you could get him something simple? You could bake like cookies or cupcakes! That’d be nice :>
Anyway you shouldn’t worry about looking like a fool even if he doesn’t get you anything after all cause christmas is the season of giving!! Plus if you baked, and you see that he didn’t get you anything, you could just eat it together with him, instead of saying that it’s a christmas gift!
Good luck on this!!

You may be able to find a Red Sox Jersey, hat etc. Keep an eye out for a nice digital watch (I like the Casio Pathfinder), a universal remote control (like the ESPN Universal Remote) or even a good quality wallet.
Funny Christmas gift ideas for my dad?

Every year I give my dad a gag gift and a regular gift. I have given him underwear with garfield on the back, Polish bowling ball, (we are part Polish) key chain that says old fart, blow up doll, reindeer poop, grinch fart, etc. Pretty much anything goes. He opens it on Christmas Eve when all the kids are sleeping and only the adults are awake to see it. I don’t want anything to expensive, but something that he won’t be expecting. I have run out of ideas on what to get him so any ideas would be great. ~Camera
~Ipod
~Sewing Machine
~Guitar

Here are some things that I have already considered asking for:
~Nicer Cell Phone
~Another Guitar
~Video Camera (which I’m not so sure about any more)
~Satalite for my TV

Please don’t tell me I’m spoiled. Maybe I am compared to a lot of people. But that list has things from two Christmases and Birthdays and I earned the tv and stereo by working on weekends for 5 months straight. Also, my family donates a lot of money to different charities and organizations, so don’t tell me to use the gift on something useful instead. If you wanted to know a little bit about my personality, I am really into “the arts” (i.e. acting, singing, dancing, playing instruments, fashion design, art. . . you get the idea), I also love animals and clothes, I am more independant and not very outgoing (don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of friends. lol). I am a girly girl and my favorite color is pink =] Furniture is okay since I am moving into a bigger room and need to fill some space. Best answer to anyone who gives me a good idea I haven’t thought of yet. I will report anyone that calls me spoiled and tells me to spend my money on something useful.

Thank you
Wow that was long.

P.S. I have a 4.0, skipped a grade, and am in IB classes, so it’s not like I’m the spoiled little brat that just mooches off her parents and doesn’t care about anything but money.

Do you like creative, cutesy stuff, plus getting lots of packages in the mail? You could ask for a gift package subscription. You get a cute fun package once a month, and each time it’s full of fun surprises (check out their site for samples).

The name of the company is fair ivy surprise package subscriptions –I get them for my sister and she almost freaks out waiting for the mail each month.
